Red Garter Band finds success with Dixieland classics

Owners of the Westborn Market in Berkley hired a band to play at the store’s grand opening last May.

The owners liked the Red Garter Band so much, they invited them back and back and…

The band now has a regular gig at Westborn…”We had seen them perform and thought they were funny and amusing and would lend to a positive atmosphere,” explained Tony Anusbigian, part owner in the family-operated Westborn Market.

“We were shocked and couldn’t believe how much people loved them,” he said.

As customers pushed their baskets through the front door, they were greeted with the band’s Dixieland flavor and cordial charm.

Songs from the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s filled the air as band leader Doug Jacobs welcomed new and old faces.

His group plays about 300 dates a year at various functions day and night.

“It’s much more fun performing during the day time,” Jacobs said.

“These people are shopping, getting healthy and everyone’s sober.

We go though about 2,000 people a day between 11-2 and customers have the time of their life. I call it shopping to a beat….”
