They are bopping in the aislesBy: Molly Abraham |

You might say a band takes a big chance when it accepts a gig at a fruit and vegetable market. Just think: All those requests for “Yes, We Have No Bananas.” And the tempting stacks of ripe tomatoes so near shoppers’ hands. But since Doug Jacobs’ Red Garter Banjo Band started playing weekends at Westborn Markets in Berkley and Dearborn, it’s been smiles all around. The Banjo Band—not exactly Top-40 but pretty irresistible—was booked for the Berkley market’s opening in May. The upbeat Dixieland music turned out to be so popular, the band got a regular spot at the new market and also in Dearborn. |
You can bop while you shop from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays at the market on Woodward north of 11 Mile at Berkley, and from noon to 3 on Sundays at 21755 Michigan Avenue in Dearborn. If the Westborn folks add a spot in Novi, something they say is in the works, you’ll find the band there, too, belting out oldies like, “If You Can’t See Mama Every Night, You Can’t See Mama at All.” Watch faces change from glazed, let’s-get-this-over-with looks
to sheer delight as people realize that, no, that’s not piped-in
music, but real live musicians between the pink grapefruit and the Granny
Smith apples. Westborn may be the only market around where people break
into applause as they push their carts down the aisles.
