The Red Garter Band’s Dixieland sound came to Detroit by way of San Francisco, New York, Chicago and New Orleans, when a young guy by the name of Doug Jacobs decided it was time to set down roots.

He became the banjo-playing ringmaster of downtown’s Red Garter Saloon, with its noisy, good times, throw-your-peanut-shells-on-the-floor atmosphere, and Detroit’s music scene was the richer for it.

The Red Garter Saloon

When urban renewal closed down the Saloon, Doug took his Dixieland style on the road. U.S. Presidents, Michigan Governors, Senators and Representatives were charmed by the Band’s 20s, 30s and 40s tunes.

At private and corporate events, summer festivals, concerts, fundraisers and on local radio and TV stations, the Red Garter Band’s “peppy interpretations set the tone (no pun intended)”, according to Zina Kramer, President of Events Marketing.

Taking the Show to the road

And let’s not forget their tireless community service: for 24 years, the Red Garter Band was the “house band” for the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, playing for upwards of 20 hours for the yearly event.

Whether entertaining boomers, seniors or children of all ages, these energetic performers bring smiles to faces, songs to lips and unstoppable movement to toes and feet.

The Red Garter Band makes“…a terrific connection with the audience…[and] truly made it a fun-filled experience for all….I certainly understand why [The Red Garter Band has] been popular for so long!”
